Shawl vs Wrap vs Stole vs Scarf — What Is the Actual Difference?

Four names, one product family. The plain-English guide our atelier uses.

Shawl, wrap, stole and scarf are used interchangeably by most people. Technically they describe four subtly different pieces, distinguished by dimensions, weight, drape and occasion.

Quick answer

NameDimensionsWeightBest for
Scarf180 × 30 cm150–180 gsmNeckwear
Stole200 × 70 cm140–180 gsmEveryday shoulder
Wrap210 × 90 cm180–240 gsmFormal cover, evening
Shawl220 × 100+ cm200–350 gsmFull cover, bridal

Scarf

Narrowest of the four. Widths 25–35 cm. Wear for commute, business travel, office layering.

Stole

Everyday middle-ground. Wider than a scarf, loops over the shoulder. Most versatile piece. Our Eri silk stoles live here — see the collection.

Wrap

Bigger than a stole, more formal. Wraps round the torso. Our most-gifted piece for weddings.

Shawl

Largest and warmest. Full-body piece across both shoulders. Deepest cultural weight.

How to choose

Occasion — commute → scarf. Everyday → stole. Weddings → wrap. Winter evenings → shawl.

Drape — 110–150 gsm liquid; 200 gsm+ structured.

Fit — err longer, not wider.

What about pashminas?

Pashmina is the fibre, not a shape. Full explainer.
